Nature Explore Classroom

The outdoor classroom at Woodbury Jewish Center’s Early Childhood Education Center has been certified as a Nature Explore Classroom.  Currently, it is one of only 450 sites across the nation to achieve this certification.

Research shows that children who learn, create, and discover in Nature Explore Classrooms exhibit deeper concentration, develop creativity and problem-solving abilities, manage stress in healthy ways, and develop greater skills across the spectrum of academic and creative learning.

ECE Director Cindy Common believes strongly in outdoor activities, “Because the opportunities for children to connect with nature and explore and discover freely have become less accessible in today’s culture, we are proud to be able to offer this opportunity to our youngest children. Not only can our students explore, create, and dance to the music they create, they are the gardeners who plan what we will grow in our garden beds, perform the planting and sow the fruits of their work.”

The Nature Explore Classroom has been developed over the course of two years and is designed to allow for growth and change as future ideas and needs are assessed.

Through continual professional development, Woodbury Jewish Center’s teaching staff understands the importance unstructured, yet intentional, experiences for children outside with nature. The staff, including a dedicated STEAM teacher, provides experiences that encourage wonder and development across all domains of learning.
